Description: Die Zukunft, The BMW Z1:developed by the research dept of BMW as an experiment project testing latest aerodynamics, plastic body materials &suspensions. Named 'Z'- There were 2 versions, 1 said Z stands or 'Zunkuft' in German, meaning 'future'; 2nd version said the car, named after its Z-axle rear suspensions, (would be used in the next generation) (E36) 3-series. Z1 was the first Roadster to be produced following the '56 507 Roadster from renowned designer Albrecht Graf von Goertz. It was the rebirth of BMWs venerable Roadster design first started in the 30s with the 315 & 328.Z1 had various features made it a BMW classic.1st,its body & chassis structure was unique. Convertibles at the time were troubled by 2 problems: poor aerodynamics & chassis rigidity. Z1 solved both problems handsomely. It had a pretty good drag coefficient at 0.36 w/ the roof up & 0.43 when the roof is down, thanks to a smooth body & a flat composite under-tray covering the bottom of the car. The under-tray drew air towards the integral rear diffuser, which generated a 'ground effect'down-force, sucking the car towards the ground. As a result, the Z1 ran very stable at high speed w/out needing large rear deck lid spoilers. Nowadays diffusers have become very popular to high performance cars,in 1988 it was a unique feature of the Z1. The Z1 was assembled by BMW___s Motorsport division in Garching by hand, same as the M1, E34 M5 & Z8. Many of the intr components were specially hand fabricated due to its limited numbers. Dash material is Buffalo hide & the seats-suede & leather combo. The chassis of Z1 differed from other convertibles. It was by no means a conventional car w/ its tin roof chopped off. The steel monocoque had especially strong side sills to compensate the loss of roof. Furthermore, the composite under-tray & the strong torque tube(linking between the trans &the rear differential)also strengthened the chassis.contact Jeff at 704.363.5427 or visit our site for more info & inventory.
